What is a QR code spray stencil?

A QR code spray stencil is a physical template - usually 3D-printed in PLA or PETG - that lets you reproduce a scannable QR code on surfaces using regular spray paint. The stencil holds the exact pattern of filled and empty modules that make up the QR code, so you get a crisp, accurate result every time you spray through it.

This tool generates the stencil as an STL file, the standard format accepted by every 3D-printer slicer on the market. You download the file, open it in your slicer, set your layer height and infill, and print. No design software needed.

How to use the QR code stencil generator

    Enter your URL.

    Paste the link you want to encode. The QR code module size and error-correction level are calculated automatically for reliable scanning even after painting.

    Set the stencil size.

    Choose how large you want the finished stencil to be. Larger stencils give more spray area and are easier to handle on walls or wooden boards. Smaller sizes work for notebooks, signs, or packaging.

    Download the STL file.

    Hit the Generate button. Your browser downloads an STL binary ready to open in any slicer.

    Slice and print.

    Open the STL in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Cura, or any slicer you prefer. Use 0.2 mm layers and 15-20% infill for a rigid yet lightweight stencil. PLA works fine indoors; PETG or ASA hold up better outdoors.

    Spray your QR code.

    Lay the stencil flat on your surface, secure it with painter's tape, and apply light coats of spray paint. Thin coats prevent bleeding under the stencil. Let the paint flash off between coats, then lift the stencil carefully.

3D printing tips for stencils

Orientation

Flat side down

Print with the flat side down - no supports needed. A brim of 4-8 mm improves bed adhesion on larger stencils and prevents warping.

Material

PLA or PETG

PLA is easiest for indoor use. For outdoor or wet surfaces, PETG resists moisture and temperature swings - print it slightly hotter and slower for strong layer adhesion.

Bridging

Clean spans

Module spans can be long. If you see sagging between modules, enable bridge cooling or reduce print speed for bridge layers for cleaner edges and a more reliable scan.
